What is a Fire Door?
A fire door is a specially designed door intended to restrict the spread of fire and smoke within a building. These doors are vital for containing fires, safeguarding occupants, and maintaining unobstructed escape routes. They serve as key elements of passive fire protection systems in a range of structures, such as high-rise residential buildings, commercial properties, and industrial facilities.

What Constitutes a Fire Door?
Hardware
Fire doors feature fire-rated hardware, such as handles and hinges that are designed to endure high heat and function during fires. This is essential to an effective installation as other materials could compromise the door’s integrity.
Intumescent Strip
Fire doors commonly have intumescent seals that expand with heat, sealing gaps to block fire and smoke. This also helps prevent smoke damage to property behind the door.
Self-Closer
The self-closing mechanism keeps smoke and flames to one side of the door. It’s also possible to use magnetic releases so that the door only self-closes during a fire alarm, which means you get the best of both worlds.
Resistance
Fire doors are designed to resist intense heat and flames. This is only guaranteed for a set amount of time. Common ratings are 30, 60, or 90 minutes depending on use case.
Smoke Control
With the help of the intumescent seal, fire doors help to control smoke and allow a safe, breathable atmosphere for any persons on the other side of them.
Installation
One of the most essential components of a safe and compliant fire door is a competent installation. Poor installations can harm the effectiveness of a fire door.
